The New York City Pride March 2018 will take place on Sunday, June 24, starting at noon. LGBT activist Brenda Howard is credited with organising the very first Gay Pride Parade in New York.
The following day, Los Angeles had its own Gay Pride march. It was called the Christopher Street Liberation Day in honour of the street on which The Stonewall Inn was based. The first Gay Pride march in the US was held on Jin New York, exactly a year after the Stonewall Riots. The riots and demonstrations lasted for nearly a week.
GAY PRIDE MIAMI 2018 DATES WINDOWS
The police was firebombed, windows and doors were smashed and buildings were set on fire as the oppressed LGBT community fought back against political and social crackdowns. As one woman who was arrested was being thrown into a paddy wagon, she shouted out to the other patrons of the bar: ‘Why don't you guys do something!’, lighting the match that was threatening to go off for a long time. However, one night, on June 27 1969, the police conducted a surprise raid on the bar and arrested 13 people. The Genovese family bribed the local police precinct to overlook its bar when it came to raids, or at the very least tip off the bartenders. It very quickly became a highly influential and popular LGBT establishment. The Mafia saw a lucrative opportunity in providing a safe space for LGBT people and the Genovese family quickly bought a straight bar in Greenwich Village called the Stonewall Inn in 1966 - the year it became legal to serve LGBT people alcohol - and reopened it as a gay bar the following year.
